A Guide to Spiritual Practices

The question of whether I am spiritual or not keeps on creeping into my mind. With that, I return to the question: What is spirituality? In a past blog post 5 Easy Ways to Start Exploring Your Spirituality I touched on this topic, but I am not yet done.

In my recent research, I found Brené Brown's definition of spirituality:

“Spirituality is recognizing and celebrating that we are all inextricably connected to each other by a power greater than all of us, and that our connection to that power and to one another is grounded in love and compassion. Practicing spirituality brings a sense of perspective, meaning, and purpose to our lives.”

It’s a definition that leaves a lot of room for individual expression. We each can define the power greater than all of us ourselves and we each have a different version of how and why we feel connected to one another. I love that Brené Brown mentions that for some people it is god and for some it’s fishing. To me, this means that we are all spiritual and we can choose how we practice.

So, how do you practice spirituality? The list is endless. It can be anything where you feel connection, meaning, and purpose. Here is a list of common ways to practice:

  • Meditation
  • Sacred Rituals & Ceremonies
  • Breathwork
  • Prayer
  • Journaling
  • Mindfulness
  • Connecting with nature
  • Fasting
  • Spiritual Study
  • Yoga
  • Silence of Speech
  • Service
  • Solitude
  • Chanting
  • Reflection
  • Gratitude

And here is a list of what is less classical but just as valid:

  • Fishing
  • Sailing
  • Diving
  • Surfing
  • Hiking
  • Martial Arts
  • Archery
  • Golf
  • Star Gazing
  • Science Fiction
  • Tarot
  • Cooking
  • Sitting by a fire
  • Foraging
  • Bathing
  • Painting
  • Astrology
  • Omen reading
  • Music

Essentially a spiritual practice can be almost anything if you do it with intention and if it evokes the feeling of being connected to something greater than yourself, whether this is being connected to others, to this universe, this cosmos, or something else. It should also have a positive impact on your life: Make you feel more peaceful, at ease, calm, confident, collected, purposeful.
