What started as a search for my roots led to a life-altering spiritual adventure, weaving together Greenlandic shamanism, the echoes of my childhood and ancestry in Bavaria, and the transformative power of ancient traditions. It all began with my name: Pipaluk, a Greenlandic name that connects me to the first-born daughter of Navarana and Peter Freuchen. That name became a doorway into a world of magic, spirit, and self-discovery.

The Call of the Wind Drum

For years, I searched for a deeper connection to Greenlandic shamanic practices, guided by the footprints of two shamans from the land covered in ice. This journey brought me to the wind drum—a sacred instrument used in shamanic rituals. The search for a wind drum brought a serendipitous surprise: the only drum maker with a shamanic blessing to craft these instruments lived less than an hour from my childhood home.

My sister and I visited this artisan together, each acquiring a drum that felt like a sacred key to another realm. Holding that drum for the first time, I knew this was more than a coincidence. I have been a drummer since the age of 3, so this instrument is always beating in my heart. The first time I played the wind drum that came home with me, I felt the universe aligning, guiding me toward deeper mysteries.

Discovering "Der Gesang des Eises"

My journey next led me to a transformative book: Der Gesang des Eises (The Song of Ice) by Annabelle Wimmer Bakic. The book chronicles Annabelle’s initiation into shamanism through an epic, perilous journey with a Greenlandic shaman in his home country. This all took place after the near death experience of birthing her second daughter. Her words resonated deeply, igniting a need to meet her in person.

I reached out and booked a one-on-one session with Annabelle—one of the last she ever conducted. With my newborn baby in tow, I met her, curious to understand the soul behind the book and the wisdom she carried. That meeting opened up pathways within that I could not shake loose. I became curious to learn more of the woman who bridged the land of where my name was from and my ancestral Bavarian roots.

From Greenland to Bavaria: A Teacher of Transformation

Annabelle’s presence is like stepping into a portal of timeless wisdom. Observing her teach at a workshop I attended over a year after meeting her the first time was awe-inspiring. Within days, she transformed ordinary individuals into a community of luminous, wise beings, each discovering their innate spiritual capabilities.

Her teachings are grounded, eloquent, and free from the need for "belief." My great takeaway from Annabelle's teachings are that the world is magic, and we are spiritual beings capable of guiding ourselves and others.

Through her, I found a profound connection to my own heritage. Exploring her teachings in German, a language I grew up with but never studied in, was another revelation. Languages became a portal, revealing the unique wisdom they each carry and how they shape our expression of spiritual truths.

The culmination of this journey is a deepening of an ancient Bavarian tradition I've practiced for several years: The Sperrnächte and Rauhnächte, or as we call it, The Mysteries of the Wild Nights. These sacred nights at the turn of the year hold transformative power, offering a profound opportunity for self-reflection, spiritual growth, and a deep connection to the natural world. They are a time between time and gift each of us who work with them the opportunity to co-create with fate and manifest our deepest desires in the year to come.
