In conversations and late-night thoughts, we must rummage through the poison to find something uniquely ours—if we ever get there at all.

Instead, we spin off stories of wars, politics and disease, of celebrity myths of heroism and scandal, of our fears, anxieties, and badly disguised insecurities.

In all this noise, we lose our ability to trust ourselves because we cannot trust our thoughts to be our own.

The remedy is a challenge. After a long day of work, a tiresome day spent serving our children, and the exhaustion that comes from catching the flu and paying bills, we become easy targets.

It is so simple—a tiny movement of the hand, and we find ourselves consuming news under the guise that it is somehow useful and beneficial. And it is.

But not if we never find the time to cleanse our palate.

A spiritual practice with no goal, just an offering of silence that quiets the mind, is a gift without measure.

When we breathe with intention and take a moment to be with ourselves, knowing that the self is the whole universe and the universe is all the self, we can begin to hear our own thoughts again.

A guiding voice, a teacher, or a range of physical actions can be immensely supportive. It can be staggering to go from the noise of the modern world to sitting quietly when there is nothing to guide us in transitioning from one state to another.

In this space, we can once more hear the dream—not the voices of the billboards asking us to be more productive, not the voices of self-help showing us how to optimize our time and create goals, not the myths of famous people that make us wonder if our lives are big or small.

Our voice that, at the same time, is the voice of the original spark that birthed our universe.
