My Tarot Journey
Jun 05, 2024Originally I believed that tarot was exclusively for fortune-telling. That people would go see tarot readers in little, dark rooms with blood-red curtains, crystal balls, incense, and an endless array of magical items, to find out what awaits them in life. This image was surely not influenced by movies.
In 2017, Pipaluk took us to the tarot exhibition that celebrated Lo Scarabeo’s 30th anniversary in Turin, Italy. That was when my opinion started to change. I realized there might be more to tarot than I originally thought. This was also the time when I received my very first deck. I played around with it a few times, but it had to wait patiently for me for another 7 years!
We have reached 2024. At Magic is the Key we have built a tarot course that includes over 20 lessons and we have hosted guest teacher Ari Wisner who shared how tarot is for everyone. It was finally my time to get into the cards.
I decided to create a little challenge for myself where I would read cards for myself daily for 30 days. Here is what I learned:
- Start easy. I asked a question and pulled just one card. Creating spreads seemed daunting in the beginning. Pulling just one card helped me ease into it and overcome the hurdle of getting started at all. I got to know the cards a little better and I still found my readings useful and fun.
- I was surprised at how fitting the readings often were. The cards I pulled and the readings I got from them made perfect sense.
- Card readings can become irrelevant after a few days. Nothing is set in stone. Some readings were very useful to me at the moment, but as life changes constantly, so does the importance of earlier thoughts. In hindsight, I could have reflected on the same spread a few days later and found a new interpretation to match the new situation.
- Some guidance in life you can’t seem to outrun. I have asked about my health in many different ways and the answer on how to get better is always the same. I’ve gotten the same advice from a coach, an oracle reading, a card reading by Pipaluk, and finally also from my own card reading. I guess there must be something to it.
- Sometimes the cards are very hard to read. I had moments where I couldn’t make any sense of what was before me. I decided that it is also ok to let a reading go. Write down what the cards were, and their meaning, and then just let them be. Sometimes I did however send my spreads to Pipaluk. Why not make use of her knowledge, seeing as I am so close to the source? (If you’re a Magic is the Key member you can also get answers directly from the source if you’re stuck.)
- Good readings take time. If you rush it, you won’t get as much out of it. I enjoyed creating my own interpretation of the cards before turning to the booklet to see what they meant. This sometimes gave me two different versions, which I then had to think about.
Overall, it has been such a good experience to start working with tarot cards and I highly encourage anyone to try it out. It is a great tool for self-reflection, gaining clarity, being creative, and telling stories. Tarot can be used in so many different ways and we each find our own path with the cards.
