Path to Self-Trust
Nov 13, 2024For some of us, learning to trust ourselves and to listen to our intuition is one of the hardest things to do. Through our upbringing and culture, we are taught to do the "right" thing rather than go with what feels right to us.
My journey has been mixed. Where I've struggled most has been with work and romantic relationships. The simplified version is that with work I followed a path that I believed was what my parents approved of and seemed right after my studies. I also didn't have the confidence to go after what I truly wanted and was influenced by what my peers were doing. With romantic partners, I often thought that the relationship was perfect on paper, but I usually knew within six months if my heart was in it or not, but I stayed so much longer.
A few years ago I needed a change badly. I realized that I would have to follow my heart, gut, and intuition if I wanted to be happy and regain my health. This led to me buying a ring about a year ago and doing a ritual with my sister and a dear friend in the forest. It is my promise ring and a constant reminder to listen to my inner voice. I initially believed and hoped that this would change everything instantly, but change can take its sweet time. It is wonderful to have this constant reminder, but the work still needs to be done.
In the past year, a lot has happened. Deep inside I know that I am on the right path regarding work. I still have many unanswered questions and it's a daily practice to ask myself what to work on. I remind myself to trust in the universe and let myself be guided by my greater self. My previous relationship has ended and I've been finding help to sort out my thoughts and feelings. When it's tough sometimes doing things on our own is not enough.
Currently, I am strengthening my self-trust muscle further by listening and taking action on little signals my body is sending me. These aren't very big, but it's cool to know that the voice is there and to explore how it feels to respond to it. I do this with supplements, how my body is asking me to move, or as little as putting on a pair of socks when my feet feel cold instead of being lazy and ignoring it.
