Our Secret Summer Solstice Family Recipe

Jun 19, 2024

On Summer Solstice we celebrate the longest day of the year. We celebrate the sun and the light and the beginning of a new season. We enter into a phase of nourishment after planting seeds throughout spring. It is a season to take care of what is already there. To appreciate the beauty and to enjoy the moment.

Hot days come with less work, with lying around in the shade, reading a book, and enjoying a cool drink or an ice cream. We spend long evenings sitting around fires with friends. Talking. Listening to music. Enjoying each other's company. At least on our days off and whenever else we can make the time from our often very busy lives.

Entering into summer last year, Pipaluk and I celebrated by creating our very own rose & linden blossom elixir on Summer Solstice. We are incredibly lucky to have both a very old rose, that was planted when our grandparents first built the home, and a linden tree that is probably much older, in our family garden. We plucked as much as we needed from each plant and took our time to clean the blossoms and the petals by brushing off any dirt and insects. The key to making the elixir is not to wash them, as you would lose some of the oils. We filled a large jar with what we had gathered and added a local, biological gin, and lots of water. The jar was sealed and stored in a cool dark place for 2 months. Pipaluk would stir it once a week until it was ready to be strained and refilled into little tincture bottles. Both of us have been using this elixir ever since. It is heart-opening, love-inducing, and soothing. When traveling it helps us feel grounded, connected to what really matters, and reminds us of home. On Summer Solstice we have arrived at the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It is beautiful and magical, but it also marks the halfway point. From now on, the nights will get longer again, returning us, ever so slowly, into darkness. It is a great reminder that we live in unison with nature’s cycles no matter if we choose to celebrate them or be completely oblivious. Eventually, it catches up with us. At the latest when we start complaining about the loss of daylight in a couple of months. At Magic is the Key we want to live in full awareness of what is happening in the natural world. We celebrate Summer Solstice as a way to connect with the cycle of the sun. We step into the legacy of our ancestors and heal the wounds caused by living disconnected from the cycles of nature and the cosmos. When fires are lit across the lands, we seek protection, blessings, healing, and the cleansing powers we need to step into a new life.
